Apple Crisp

It’s apple picking season and my daughter and I have gone twice now so my family has been eating apples like crazy. I made a lot of homemade applesauce and really wanted some apple crisp. I searched online for a recipe that doesn’t contain a lot of sugar and found this one from Spark People Recipes. I made it a couple weeks ago and used even less sugar this time. It didn’t need a lot of sugar since the apples are sweet enough already.


  • 3 medium baking apples, cored, sliced thin
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 tablespoon sugar (the original recipe calls for 2 tablespoons)
  • 2 tablespoons flour


  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar (the original recipe calls for 1/4 cup)
  • 2 tablespoons butter


Mix first four ingredients and place into 9-inch (square or round) baking dish.

In small bowl, mix topping ingredients until crumbly. I cut the butter into small pieces and mixed in. Sprinkle topping over the apples.

Bake at 325 degrees until apples are soft and topping is golden brown (about 30 minutes).

The original recipe says to bake around 30 minutes. I ended up baking mine for closer to 45 minutes.
